Honestly, the most common reaction to manual contouring is skepticism. "How can you move bones with your hands?", "Isn't it just temporary swelling reduction?"


Fair questions. Today we'll answer them with research papers and anatomical data.


The answer: We don't move bones. We release fascia, and this mechanism is extensively studied in physical medicine.



What Is Fascia?


Fascia is a collagen-based connective tissue that wraps muscles, bones, and organs. Think of the white membrane just inside an orange peel.

Mechanism 1: Mechanical Deformation


Sustained pressure on fascia changes collagen fiber alignment. Adhered, tangled fibers release, restoring tissue range of motion.


A 2015 systematic review (Ajimsha et al., Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies) confirmed that MFR has significant effects on adhesion resolution and range of motion recovery.


Mechanism 2: Viscoelastic Response


Fascia is a viscoelastic material. Quick force meets rigid resistance, but slow, sustained pressure causes it to flow and deform like liquid.


This is called the creep response. It's why manual care holds pressure for 90-120+ seconds per point — to induce this creep response.


Mechanism 3: Muscle Spindle Reset


Appropriate stimulation to muscle spindles in hypertonic muscles causes the central nervous system to reset the baseline muscle tone.


Applied to the masseter, this releases one-sided jaw muscle hypertrophy, improving bilateral symmetry.
